The Counselling Foundation are to take part in an innovative service which launches today by the Hertfordshire County Council to provide free couples conflict counselling.
Hertfordshire council Families First has commissioned two organisations which include the Foundation and Young Herts Homeless to provide free counselling and mediation to parents who want to improve their relationship whether they are living together or are separated, in order to resolve conflict and improve family life.
Children in families with high levels of parental conflict are shown to have a higher risk of negative outcomes, which has an impact on the behaviour and mental wellbeing of these children. Whilst children are resilient and adapt to separation and divorce, it is ongoing hostility between parents which is destructive and psychologically damaging.
Counsellors will focus couples on how to increase stability in family life, improve communication, reducing anxiety in themselves and family members. A trained professional will listen carefully to parents to make sure they clarify the problem areas in their own terms and help them decide what steps they want to take next. Parents will have the opportunity to learn to apply healthy ways of communicating with each other and learn skills to actively listen.
This new provision is a pilot scheme and will be specifically for families in Broxbourne, Stevenage, Watford, Hertsmere and Welwyn Hatfield who qualify for the service. To access this free mediation and counselling service, you must be parents or parents to be of a child or children (at least one child aged under 18, or expecting a baby. There must be an eCAF or Families First assessment in place.
Robert Cuming, CEO, said “This is really good news for the Foundation and will compliment our existing low cost counselling service. This developing work with the council will help promote the importance and accessibility of positive mental health for everyone in our communities”.
