Our popular Introduction to Counselling courses running throughout the year are open to anyone interested in obtaining and learning how to use counselling skills in any area of life whether personal or professional. It would benefit those working in private or public health, nursing, caring, counselling, mental health, teaching, mentoring, guidance, customer services, human resources, management, or pastoral areas.

This is a 12 hour introductory course (over either 4 or 6 weeks), providing an accessible and interesting insight to the theory and practice of counselling.  While the course is primarily theoretical, it also develops some awareness of the basic skills in counselling practice.

With as many as one in four people experiencing a mental health ill health each year in the UK, the course provides the tools to understand and effectively listen to those around us.  These useful competencies of active listening are not just for anyone wanting to become a counsellor, but for managers, team workers as well as parents and carers who require powerful yet underestimated tools when being responsible for others.

How well we listen has a major impact on our job effectiveness, and on the quality of relationships with others.  Developing active listening skills will help improve our productivity, as well as ability to influence, persuade, negotiate and avoid conflicts in any area of life.

You will gain a good grounding in key topics in counselling, including its cultural and historical origins, different theoretical orientations and the vital role of the counselling relationship.

The course provides an introduction and can be followed by the Foundation Certificate which starts in September 2018. It is not necessary to do the Introduction course prior to the Foundation Certificate but recommended.
